Buying guide

A 270-degree awning wraps shade around the side and back of your vehicle. The Shelta 270 is freestanding with 2.5m arms, so it holds itself out without poles in calm weather and swings out in seconds. It's made from 280gsm ripstop poly-cotton canvas, comes in left-hand and right-hand versions, and fits most roof racks with the three supplied brackets.

Add the Shelta 270 Awning Wall Kit to turn it into a room at camp: six walls that zip and Velcro on, used in any combination against sun, wind and rain.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 270-degree awning?

An awning that mounts on one rear corner of your roof rack and swings out around the side and the back of the vehicle, about three-quarters of a circle. You get shade over the side door and the rear at once, where most cooking and unpacking happens, and it folds back into its cover on the rack.

Does the Shelta 270 need poles?

Not in calm weather. It's freestanding: the 2.5m arms hold it out on their own. When the wind picks up, swing down the pole attached to the arm and peg it in.

Like any 270-degree awning, it catches wind like a sail, so don't leave it out unsupported in strong gusts.

Left-hand or right-hand: which do I need?

Choose the side you want it to open on. The left-hand version opens on the passenger side, and the right-hand version on the driver's side.

Many people choose the passenger side, so camp is on the kerb side when you pull over by the road.

Will it fit my vehicle?

Three L-brackets are supplied to suit most roof racks: two at the rear to carry the hinge and one towards the front.

The awning weighs 25.5kg with its brackets. As with any roof-mounted gear, add it up with everything else on the rack and confirm it's within your rack's and vehicle's dynamic roof load rating.

How does it handle rain?

It's 280gsm ripstop poly-cotton canvas. Three fold-up props on the arms lift the canvas so rain runs off rather than pooling, and a magnetic weather gutter seals across the back of the vehicle.

If you pack it away wet, open it out to dry as soon as you can.

Can I turn it into a room?

Yes, with the Shelta 270 Awning Wall Kit: six 280gsm canvas walls that zip and Velcro on. Use one or two against sun, wind or rain, or all six for an enclosed room.

Four walls have a large mesh doorway, and the two against the vehicle have zippered openings. Order the same hand as your awning. The rear wall may not fit vehicles with a rear-mounted spare wheel or other gear on the back.

How much is delivery and where do you send?

We deliver anywhere in Australia, and shipping is free on orders of $1,500 or more. Below that, it's calculated at checkout from your address and the items in your order. Every delivery includes in-transit insurance, and we send with Australia Post, FedEx or DHL depending on the size and weight of your order.

Can I pick up my order instead?

Yes. Choose Pickup In-Store at checkout and collect your order from our store at 14 Cessna Street, Marcoola, on the Sunshine Coast. It saves the shipping cost.

Do you ship overseas?

Yes, for everything except awnings. International shipping is calculated at checkout, not including local import duties and taxes, which the receiver pays. For an overseas quote on an awning, email info@mrswagman.com.au or call +61 (0)7 5302 6954.

What's the warranty?

Every Mr Swagman product has a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects, such as stitching or a seam coming apart, or a zip, buckle or pole failing in normal use. It starts on the day you receive the product, and it's in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes, within 30 days of receiving it, as long as it's unused and in its original packaging. Please contact us first. You pay the return freight, the original shipping cost isn't refunded, and a 5% restocking fee comes off your refund, which we process once the item is back with us and approved for resale. If anything arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, that's different: contact us and we'll sort it out under the Australian Consumer Law, with no restocking fee.

What should I do when my order arrives?

Check the box and the product for damage before you sign for it. If there's any damage, note it with the driver before signing, or refuse the delivery. Without that, we can't claim on the freight insurance.
